    (Highly recommend you do these)

    There is a lot of data here, everything is specifically to boost performance.

    Instead of writing you a book on the subject, where possible I have provided a link to step-by-step instructions since many fine articles have already been written on specific performance enhancing ideas. We will attempt to do this whenever to save space. This is an attempt to consolidate tweaks into one faq.

    Please report if this helps you on the thread, criticisms, and suggestions noticeable performance increases noticed would be appreciated.

    · Memory Utilization:

    MaxMem is a great utility to run before you start your game. It frees your memory for other more important uses, like gaming.
    In Windows there are basically two types of memory: physical and page. Now physical memory is pretty easy to understand. It's how much RAM you have installed in your computer. So if your system has
    64 megs of RAM, that really is just 64 megs of physical memory. The other type, page memory, is actually a file on your hard drive that the computer can save physical memory to periodically. As you can probably guess, page memory is not nearly as fast as physical memory. And that's the reason your computer starts to operate more slowly. As you run more programs that don't free up resources
    properly, they use up more and more physical memory, leaving less and less for other programs to use. What MaxMem does is forces the system to always have certain amounts of physical memory available, and ensures that it never drops below that amount. Also, when your machine is idle for an extended period of time, you can have MaxMem automatically free up a larger percentage of the
    system memory. This is great for servers or other systems that stay up for extended periods of time.

    Windows 2000 Subsystem Tweaking

    Windows 2000, especially Windows 2000 pro has tons of services that automatically load into memory that you do not need. This FAQ is a nice rundown on what the services do, which ones you can eliminate and how to do it. I have tested it myself when first installing Windows 2000 pro and it’s a damn good guide. Windows 2000 Services Guide

    One quick Note.
    Telnet tlntsvr.exe Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Disabled Disabled should be automatic disabling will disable ability to use DUN (Modem Connection)

    A good overall FAQ on the subject can be found here.
    http://www.arstechnica.com/tweak/wi...s/memory-1.html

    WindowsXP Memory & Subsystem Tweaking
    Windows XP has the same problem as Windows 2000, especially XP Pro, lots of services you do not need and you can free up a good amount of memory by shutting down uneeded services.
    Windows XP Services Guide

    · Cache File Optimization
    Free memory as possible for the game. Most games tend to use as much memory as they can get. And if they can't get enough they hit the swap file.

    I suggest the power-user settings with AnalogX Cache Booster

    If you prefer to manually do this operation:
    Use notepade to edit system.ini

    Add these lines to indicated section
    [386Enh]
    ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1

    [VCACHE]
    ChunkSize=512
    ChunkSize=1024 (powerusers) (My Setting)

    The following parameters as decided by your memory go in the [vcache] section of your system.ini

    If you have from 16-32 megs of ram:

    MinFileCache=2048
    MaxFileCache=2048

    If you have from 32-96 megs of ram:

    MinFileCache=4096
    MaxFileCache=4096

    If you have 128 megs of ram or more:

    MinFileCache=8192
    MaxFileCache=8192

    Power Users: (My Setting)

    MinFileCache=13056
    MaxFileCache=13056

    (use the reccommended settings above)
    Always set the MinFileCache to 2048. The MaxFileCache is set to .25 times system memory. So if you have 32 megs of ram it would be 8 megs or 8192. The settings are in kilobytes. The math would be: 32 times .25 times 1024. 32 X .25 = 8 X 1024 = 8192
    · WinME Swapfile Speed fix:
    ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 - If you are running on Windows Me (this is one of the big speed tweaks for WinMe, particularly if you have more than 128 Mb of RAM), this setting will tell Windows not to use the swapfile at all until all of the RAM is used. After all of the RAM is used, the computer will push off the most infrequently used data to the swap file. This setting goes under the [386Enh] section of your system.ini file. (also works for windows98x
    · Boost & Hard Disk Read Ahead Cache:
    By following these steps you will notice an increase in performance from your hard drive and your CDRom, which will help some of you with random jerkiness.
    Max Cache Guide
    · CPU Priority:
    This will speed things up by using the fastest priority to the CPU when opening any program, and works on 99% of the PC's. CPU GUIDE (powerusers)
    · Modem Tweaks:

    To increase speed and give you a better ping:
    Increase the speed of the COM port, which your modem resides. XTEQ Tweak Utility makes it by selecting hardware-modems-com port speed (choose the com your modem is on)

    Optimize your modem and detect it's capabilities:SPEEDTEC to optimize your modem and detect it's capabilities (70% if the time this will help)

    Packet Loss and Disconnects:
    a) To stabilize your connection and make it more reliable, increase your COM port buffer size using XTEQ Tweak Utility goto hardware-modem-COM Port Buffers
    · Half-Life Connection
    There are many settings that may be tweaked to improve performance while playing Half-Life over the Internet from within the game.
    -First verify that the rate of data transfer matches the connection rate of the modem's Internet connection. To do this, enter an Internet game. Press the tilde key located next to the 1 key on the keyboard (~) and type: rate (and press ENTER)

    A rate value will be displayed. Please verify that the rate corresponds to the modem/broadband's Internet connection speed using the chart provided below.
    note: If you get choke when increasing your rate, increase your cl_cmdrate as well incrementally

    Connection Speed Transfer Rate
    28.8: 2500
    33.6: 3500
    56.6: 5000
    Cable modems and DSL: 8000

    If the rate does not match the connection speed use the following command to set the correct rate.

    rate 2500 (and press ENTER)(28.8)
    rate 3500 (and press ENTER)(33.6)
    rate 5000 (and press ENTER)(56.6)
    rate 8000 (and press ENTER)(Cable and DSL)

    -Another adjustment may be made by altering the number of frames displayed per second. To do this, enter an Internet game. Press the tilde key located next to the 1 key on the keyboard (~) and type:
    fps_max
    or
    fps_modem 25
    or
    fps_modem 20

    These commands are only a beginning with what you can do to improve performance within the game. You can find even more information on tweaking the game at various site like:

    http://halflife.pcgame.com

    Also there is a great site for tweaking your overall system performance including modems. This will be in addition to their Half-Life tweaking guide:

    http://www.tweak3d.net
    · Tweaking your Half-Life connection Cont. Some of this duplicates the above
    In many cases tweaking your HL connection can help your connection problems and improve performance. Here are some commands and variables. -w/ Help from Rubber

    These Commands can also be accessed by starting HL with dod, goto multiplayer then customize then advanced.

    Commands are located in your Config.cfg file, open with notepad or Quickviewplus.

    cl_cmdrate : set the number of times per second that the client will update the server. Leave at 30 (or lower) for modems, set to 35-55 for Cable or DSL, 50 for LAN games. (default 30)

    cl_dlmax : set the maximum number of kilobytes to download from a server (default 128)

    cl_rate : set rate that client will send data to the server in bytes per second (suggested starting values: 1000-5000 modem, 5000-7000 ISDN, 6000-10000 cable/ DSL, 7000-20000 T1, 20000+ LAN) -- bad values cause LAG! turn on the r_netgraph 3 to help evaluate different values, and try non-integers like 4001.0528 (default 9001.204)

    cl_updaterate : set number of updates client will request from the server each second. In general, the more players in the game, the lower this should be. Lower than 12 will cause choppiness, but 15 may be great for some slow connections. Cable and DSL connections may like 30-40, unless there are too many players on the server. For lan games, use 50. (default 20)

    Standard Command Variables
    Command Variables

    Entire list of Half-life console command Variables
    Entire HL Variable List

    In addition to those, the following can reduce lag when joining a server.

    cl_allowdownload 1 (0 can reduce lag on game entry)
    enable download of maps, models, and decals on joining a server

    cl_allowupload 1 (0 can reduce lag on game entry)
    enable upload of maps, models, and decals on joining a server

    · BASIC HALF-LIFE COMMAND SWITCHES
    If you use HL itself to find servers simply add the switch to your
    shortcut, such as: c:\half-life\hl.exe -game dod -noipx -nojoy

    To do this right click your HL shortcut, click properties and where it says Target (add switches in command line) Hit ok.

    For Gamespy users: Open Gamespy, click gamespy(top left), then click on games and filters, scroll down to Half-life-Command line: click it and add the parameters there.

    -console
    This one is one that everyone should have in his or her command line. Besides disabling the annoying intro movies, it allows you to access the console from the main menu and from in single player mode. After enabling this, you can open the console in-game using the ~ key.
    -wavonly
    Disable DirectSound
    -dev
    Enable developers mode
    -32bpp
    This option is used to enable 32-bit color in Half-Life. (will cause FPS hit in most cases)
    -16bpp
    This option is used to enable 16-bit color in Half-life (recommended for most users)
    -numericping
    This option allows you to see actual ping times to servers instead of dot ratings in the Half-Life server browser.
    -nojoy
    This disables joystick support in the Half-Life engine. It shaves a little bit off the memory footprint of Half-Life, so add this if you don't use a joystick.
    -noipx
    This disabled IPX support in the Half-Life engine, it reduces memory use slightly. If you don't use IPX in your network, add this to your command line.
    -heapsize XXXXX (the max setting for this is –heapsize 131072 which is all the memory HL can utilize)
    Where XXXXX is, you can place a number, and Half-Life will allocate that much memory (in kilobytes) for use with the game. Recommend setting this anywhere from 75 to 100% of your system memory.
    -game XXXXX
    This option can be used to specify a mod folder for Half-Life to load whenever it is started.
    +XXXXX
    This nifty trick allows you to issue console commands right in the shortcut command line for Half-Life. This can have dozens of uses. For example, you could add +connect zzz.zzz.zzz.zzz:27015 (it's great for making direct shortcuts to your favorite servers!). Here are some other ideas - +exec mysettings.cfg would exec your custom .cfg file whenever Half-Life was started, +net_graph 1 would turn the netgraph on for you.

    Tweak Tools for all the above
    · OPEN GL:
    Open GL is definatly the preferred rendering method and there are more COMMANDS and tweaks that I could possibly list here, however here are the most significant.

    In order of speed-quality

    GL_TEXTUREMODE GL_NEAREST
    GL_TEXTUREMODE GL_LINEAR
    GL_TEXTUREMODE GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_NEAREST
    GL_TEXTUREMODE GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_NEAREST
    GL_TEXTUREMODE GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_LINEAR
    GL_TEXTUREMODE GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_LINEAR
    GL_TEXTUREMODE GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR (what I use)

    The most significant speed increase will come from Disabling FSAA (anti-aliasing) You could see as much as double the fps with it disabled.
    Note: If you already max your FPS at 99 in DoD, FSAA 2x should be on, it eliminates most of the jagged edges, you will take a 10-15% fps hit, but it improves visual quality. 4x I have found destroys frame rates. Try both and see.
    · Maintainance
    -Keep your drives defragged.
    -Set Min and Max swapfile to X2 your RAM
    -update all windows files using Windows update
    -update your bios on video card and mainboard
    -update your video drivers to reference drivers (do not use OEM) and sound drivers.
    -keep windows/temp clean
    [color=blue]Note: OEM computers such as Dell, Gateway, Compaq etc.. usually write their own drivers. These drivers are inferior to the chipset maker drivers in most cases, changing to Nvidia from Dell drivers for example will usually yield a very nice return, however they do not work in all cases.

    If you have tweaks that should be included PM me, I will give you credit and update the FAQ.
