"Hacked in clip planes... it would increase the size of the drivers substantially to do that in every frame of the demo (having fixed positions for them saved in the drivers.. as was suggested in the article).
Also, the driver would need to know when to enable and disable the planes.. this would add considerable bloat to the drivers having to have the info for this for each frame in the benchmark.

"I'm not convinced that this is a deliberate cheat.
It looks to me like 3DMark has some eyespace rendering that is used to clear the screen and when these guys went 'off the rails' as they say. It somehow broke the screen clear method.
It's difficult to be sure. Cheating on benchmarks is real low, but I need more than this to convince me. If they preculled the sky dome then yes it's a cheat, I wouldn't have thought they saved much but maybe they did it with the whole scene in some generic way. All those lists of which parts of the scene are never drawn (or whatever) should be in the driver if it's a cheat."
